The Public Safety Education Program is a nonprofit organization specifically dedicated to educating children along with some adults, about the hazards of fire, home fire prevention techniques and proper fire escape procedures.

With the assistance of "Little Squirt", the live talking fire truck, professional firefighters present a safety education program to children up through the sixth grade.

During the program children are informed of the warning signs that a fire is present: sounding smoke alarms, hot doors, and smoke filled rooms.  They are also told that their family should have a safe meeting place outside the home in the event of a fire.  The children are taught fire escape procedures, how and when to dial 911, crawling and touching a door with the back of their hand and crawling to a window for an alternate escape route.

One of the impressions that the children leave the program with is the "Stop, Drop and Roll" technique used in a clothing fire incident.

Purpose

The purpose of the program is to encourage safety and to increase knowledge of escape procedures and smoke alarms.  The show provides hands-on demonstrations of fire safety and prevention in the home.

Goals

The goal for the Public Safety Education Program has been and continues to be education for elementary school age children in the area of fire safety and prevention.
